From Flare-ups to Follow-through: My Journey from SebDerm Patient to Trichologist By Sherine

For years, my relationship with my scalp was a battle. If you’ve ever lived with Seborrheic Dermatitis (SebDerm), you know the routine: the relentless itch, the "snowfall" on your shoulders, and the desperate search for a "miracle" cure that usually ends in red, raw skin.

I’ve tried the supermarket shampoos, the "holy grail" oils, and the harsh antifungals. More often than not, I was over-treating the symptoms and destroying my skin barrier in the process. That frustration—the gap between what the labels promised and what my scalp actually needed—is what drove me to study Trichology.

Why I Studied the Science

I didn’t just want to hide the flakes; I wanted to understand the biology. Studying Trichology changed everything for me. It taught me that the scalp is a delicate ecosystem. When we have a flare-up, we often "attack" it with harsh chemicals, forgetting that the skin underneath is already compromised.

I realised that managing a scalp condition isn't just about "killing the fungus"—it’s about barrier repair, pH balance, and patience.

Bringing Expertise to the Ivy Wild Community

I’m thrilled to be sharing my journey here. While I don’t run a private practice, I am deeply committed to breaking down complex scalp science into advice you can actually use at home.

Whether you are dealing with SebDerm, thinning hair, or a hyper-reactive scalp (like I do, especially managing it alongside urticaria), I want to help you understand the why behind the "what".

What We’ll Explore Together

Moving forward, I’ll be using this space to dive deep into the world of hair and scalp health. My goal is to help you navigate the noise by exploring:

Scalp Conditions: Understanding everything from SebDerm and Psoriasis to Folliculitis and hair thinning.

The Science of Ingredients: Breaking down what is actually in your bottles—from the actives that work to the fillers that might be causing irritation.

Debunking Myths: Separating the "viral" hair trends from the clinical reality.

I’d Love to Hear From You

I want this blog to be a resource that truly serves you. To make sure I’m tackling the topics that matter most, I’d love to know:

• What specific scalp or hair problems are you currently struggling with?

• Is there a particular ingredient or "viral" hair hack you’ve been curious about?

• What is the one question about your hair health you’ve never had a clear answer for?

Drop your thoughts in the comments or send over your suggestions. We’re in this journey together to find balance, health, and confidence in our hair.

Also I like to share about my discoveries, research, and vulnerabilities on my substack too
